371825 38med The History of Body Art Body art has been around for centuries and originated through the differentiation in markings that were used between tribes. Through the markings which were used throughout the tribes, individuals often used ink which was applied to the surface of the skin and therefore washed off after a certain amount of time until the discovery that ink which was embedded into the skin and placed under the first layer would heal and then leave permanent markings throughout the skin.

Although there are hundreds of years of history when it comes to tattooing through modern times, there are many, many instances of tattoos being used throughout ancient history, thousands and thousands of years ago. Through ancient tribes like the Polynesian culture, tattoos were use on the skin after other methods of marking had been introduced, such as burning of the skin to create markings.

Throughout this rich history, there have been changes in the reasons for people choosing to tattoo their body. Tattoos were created originally to be able to identify members through the same tribe or through the same community. Of late, tattoos have been created to allow individuals to separate themselves from others within the community or to create the unique appearance that comes with choosing to have a tattoo placed on the body.
