Making Henna Ink for Hair
Although henna ink has been traditionally used to create temporary tattoos which are present on the skin, there are a variety of individuals that have chosen to take advantage of henna ink to find a completely natural way to change the color of the hair.
Henna powder should be prepared and combined with lemon juice to activate the dye within the henna powder, at which time the dye should be left to absorb into the powder and become developed enough to have an effect on the hair that is going to be dyed. This process can take anywhere from three to six hours and include the dye becoming less pasty therefore additional lemon juice must be added to the mixture to soften the paste. There are many people that choose to add essential oils to the mixture to soften the dye and allow the natural oils to sink into the hair while the dye is being applied.
Once the colors have developed within the paste the paste can be applied to the hair. This can be done through the use of a large brush, or with the hands. Many people find it easier to use a large coarse brush, as this can ensure that the dye is able to reach all of the strands of hair that have been exposed to the dye.
There are many benefits to using henna dyes and henna inks for hair, including the fact that this temporary dye which will add color to the hair will do so without harming the hair follicles. There are many other types of dye that contain harsh chemicals and can damage the hair with each application, therefore henna ink is a great alternative to these dyes.

Again: Henna is not temporary, it will grow out! I hope someone fixes this article and the others that state that henna is temporary.

Never heard of henna being used as a hair dye.
Naya – What do you mean henna is not temporary, it will grow out?

Henna is a permanent dye (for hair at least) and it binds to the hair (it is described quite nicely on hennaforhair.com). That’s what Naya meant about growing it out, because that is how you’d have to get the colour out if you changed your mind.
That said, it means that it remains vibrant far longer than commercial red dyes, which is why I love it so much. If that is what you want, then you’ll love it. However, if you don’t like the colour result, you will have a hard time getting it out. Strand test first ;)
