The island of Hawaii comes with an ambience that can be created through the use of the atmosphere, the beach and the general morale of the people that are living on one of the many Hawaiian Islands. This way of life can easily translate into a variety of tattoo designs which can be placed on many parts of the body.
One of the most popular tattoo designs that are available are the flowers which are used throughout the island to form the traditional Leis as well as the island flowers which grow on various parts of each island. These flowers can be tattooed on various parts of the body that will include the bright colors of the island and therefore can be used within tattoos popularly using these flowers in combination with vines and other types of greenery that can be found on the islands.
Other Hawaiian tattoo designs that have become popular are those that have seen Polynesian influence through the use of a variety of tribal tattoos that can be created. These tribal tattoos are often completed in dark ink, without the use of color and have a variety of meanings depending on the shapes that are used in the Hawaiian tattoo designs. These tribal tattoos can be traced to the time of when Hawaii had cultural tribes and the designs have been modernized to become reflected in modern tattoos.
There are many people that are from the islands of Hawaii and take advantage of these designs to celebrate their heritage and culture from the island. These designs can have personal meaning, family meanings and even meanings that can help to celebrate the entire culture within the island. These tattoos are a great way to display the love for the culture and the love for the island of Hawaii.

I’m looking for a Hawaiin tattoo to honor my mother who has passed on. My grandmother was 100% hawaiin and my mother was 50%. Not being very close to my mother’s side of the family, I feel like my link to the islands is gone. She always wanted me to embrace that part of my heritage. I just want to ensure that I get something that not only reflects my mother but hawaii as well. Something traditional yet modern. Can you help?

Have a look around the site to find inspiration for Hawaiian and Polynesian tattoos.
You should look for traditional colors and designs but find a way to modernize these styles and make them your own. Consider using elements like script or working with a tattoo artists to create a custom design!

Tamika,
A tattoo is a great way to express honor to someone who has passed on. Maybe you could take a trip to Hawaii and get a tattoo right there. My buddy just did the same thing but wasn’t for someone who passed on. Getting the tattoo in Hawaii might restore that missing link you feel is missing :)
Kind regards
