There are no Chinese alphabets. There are only Chinese characters. Each character is a word by itself with its own meaning and pronunciation. Chinese calligraphy is an artistic writing of the Chinese characters. Kirsty probably didn’t get her tattoo from a Chinese person, or a reputable source. Out of context, the kanji in this article translates directly to the English word “and.” Yes, it means “and,” which essentially has no meaning whatsoever.
Ask yourself this: How would you feel if the English word “and” were tattooed onto your body?
This is one of my greatest sources of frustration—many, many white Americans that I have encountered laugh at foreigners for not being able to speak English fluently. However, at least foreigners make the attempt to become acquainted with an unfamiliar language.
Needless to say, the practice of commodifying the Chinese language intrinsically perpetuates the stereotypes of mysticism that surround the Chinese culture.
Stop it. We’re irritated at the fact that you think of us as kimono-wearing, ninja star-throwing samurais who can do math really well.
